Hong Kong In 2 Days

Girl posing in Hong Kong with neon lights.

We have been in Hong Kong last year. At that time, we thought it was a bad choice of the holiday because of the heat, which was hard to handle. I love hot weather, but that was something extra. Imagine having a shower and just a minute later dream about another one. So here it is TRAVEL TIP 1: check which time of the year is the best to visit. Late July wasn't the best idea for a Hong Kong holiday. Another stressful part was that we only had two days there. Which lead us to TRAVEL TIP 2: you need more days for Hong Kong to enjoy it fully.

Now to positives. We have been in the last good moments there. Day after we left, the protesting had become more aggressive and more disturbing around the city. When we was there, we hardly ever saw any police. And this year we are witnessing the COVID-19 situation around the world, so it would be hard to travel there this year. In the end, we have been lucky.

So what you can do in just 2 days in Hong Kong? Photography skyscrapers.

If anybody will tell you that this place is perfect for photography because of their buildings, I would tell you they are right. I regret that I didn't have a wide-angle lens (another dream on my shopping list). With my 50mm 1.8, it was a real struggle to get the bigger picture. We stayed in the Wanchai district with close access to two subway stations and the 7 eleven shop across the road (a big lifesaver when you become hungry during the night). I loved the small hidden alleyways as they created extra drama in the photos. And the contrast of course.

At that time I did not think about having a blog, so my photos are not perfect. However, I did try as much as I could. If we stick to the buildings, a must place to go to is known as The Monster Building. It is a nickname for one building. Part of this building is Oceanic Mansion, Fook Cheong Building, Montane Mansion, Yick Cheong Building, and Yick Fat Building. It was built in the 1960s.

In recent years it has become really popular within photographers, thanks to its symmetry and light contrast on the courtyard. It is very popular within Instagrammers too and has featured in films like Ghost in The Shell and Transformers. Sometimes it can be challenging to take photos there, as with growing popularity the residents issued a ban for entrance to the courtyard. However, we did have no problem with that as long as we kept quiet and not disturbing the residents of the building.

Other places to visit are Hong Kong's markets. We loved the Ladies Market, especially at night time when the temperature slightly cools down. The market runs along Tung Choi Street, located in the middle of the Mong Kok neighbourhood. You can buy things like women and mens clothes, fake designer wallets, electronics and much more. There are lots of food and drink shops along the market. My favourite was Hong Kong bubble waffle, which I had in London before. However, in Hong Kong they was less sweet, which suited my taste buds much better.

Another place which I liked was the shrine Tin Hau Temple Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon. At the end of the staircase, you can find a temple, which unfortunately I could not photograph as my camera died.

When you are in Hong Kong you must see Victoria Harbour and The Peak. While being in the harbour you can book a ride on the dragon boat or any other boat, to swim around and admire the wall made from buildings. It is a really fresh experience, especially during the hot season.

The Peak is worth to see at any time. During the day you have a beautiful view of Hong Kong, and during the night you can see how beautiful everything lights up. I highly recommend using a tram service to get there. But you can jump on the bus as well.

Obviously, there is much more to see, like Big Buddha, the fishing village, etc. But we simply had run out of time. Hope I will be able to visit again.
