Let's starts with a fact. I am a self-thought photographer. I always had a camera, but never bother to learn it. To be honest, I still learn every day. Photography is a hobby which will always teach you something new. It will never bore you as long as you will put yourself into it. Let's create some points, to make it easier to digest.
Read your camera manual. Period. Yes, you can google it or look at YouTube. You will find some answers. But that will be someone answer. You will not master your device and in this case, you will never find yourself. I have been there. I did copy someone settings with the hope that I will achieve this beautiful blurry background and amazing colours. I did not happen. As every situation is different. Every place is different. And light is constantly changing. So there is no one answer. When you will learn your manual, you will know how to control ISO, shutter speed, or f stop. With this knowledge and a bit of practice, you will see results.
2. Learn the rules of composition. And learn when and how to break them. For many people, I might be an average or even bad photographer, because I love to brake this rule. No idea if the changing time its caused or the way how I like my photos to look like. Example? Framing. I love central framing. I do not like the rule of thirds, but still, sometimes I follow it. It all depends on the situation, place or what I try to show. There is a moment when the rule of thirds simply does not fit into my vision. And that's it. Rules are for breaking them. Well sometimes ; ) Below, it was broken to create a "grass symmetry".

3. Learn to edit. These days it is hard to meet a well know photographer who does not use editing software. Yes. You can still find a few here and there (I am lucky to have one friend like that), and you should admire them. This is real art, and I could never master it. So I went with editing software. My favourite is Photoshop for heavier editing and Lightroom for quick edits. Quick edits, still need some time though ;). In next post, I will cover a little bit more about Lightroom so keep checking :)
4. Now, the most important. Have fun! And follow the light and shadow! With shadows and light you can create a magic in everyplace. Even "boring" living room.
